Square Enix announced an HD remaster to 1998 RPG SaGa Frontier. SaGa Frontier Remastered will release in Summer 2021 on PlayStation 4, Switch, Steam PC, and iOS and Android mobile devices.

The HD remaster is being overseen by original series creator Akitoshi Kawazu, who also worked on the first two Final Fantasy games. Aside from remastered graphics, the new version will feature a new main playable character, new story and character events, and the Glimmer ability that grants new skills and attacks to characters.

The SaGa series originally began life on the Game Boy, and was translated as Final Fantasy Legend to ride the coattails of the growing popular of the FF RPG series. Final Fantasy Legend spawned two more sequels before launching as Romancing SaGa on the Super Famicom, which wouldn’t come to the West until a decade later during the PlayStation 2 era in the early 2000s.

The  lesser known RPG series is known for its more open world exploration rather than linear story that most JRPGs adhere to. Instead the series emphasized its characters, and by Romancing SaGa, story events could change dramatically depending on which characters are in the party and which choices you’ve made in conversation.

SaGa Frontier Remastered is the latest in Square Enix’s revival to bring the SaGa series to Western audiences. The most recent entry is Romancing SaGa Re;universe, a free-to-play gacha mobile game on iOS and Android. The series is rated T for Teen.
