Call of Duty: Ghosts

New Release: Call of Duty: Ghosts

The newest major Call of Duty game, Call of Duty: Ghosts, was released today for current and next-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles, as well as PC and the Wii U.

Ghosts takes place in a near-future United States, where the country is now relying on South America for oil. The oil-rich South American countries have united into a power called the Federation, and within the first level of the game they attack the United States, obliterating all the major cities. The player, along with the player’s brother, joins an elite task force called the Ghosts to defend America and eventually go behind enemy lines.

But most people don’t play Call of Duty for the story, and reviewers are calling it “functional at best.” Call of Duty is about explosive action sequences and adrenaline-boosting firefights. Players can expect tight, spectacle-driven gameplay and an emphasis on tactical multiplayer. The slightly revamped multiplayer encourages teamwork in the large, complicated maps where matches take place.

It’s the to-buy game of the moment, but Call of Duty: Ghosts doesn’t bring much new to the table. The multiplayer community will no doubt continue to be strong, but the series doesn’t make any great innovations. For some players, that’s just fine; but for a $60 price tag, Ghosts is no small commitment.
