Rokaplay and Mi’Pu’Mi Games have announced a co-op sequel to A Game About Digging A Hole, and it’s called A Game About Digging A Hole Together.

A Game About Digging A Hole is a simple $5 sandbox mining game that quickly went viral, selling over a million copies. In their backyard, players dig a hole with their trusty shovel, discover buried treasure and other goodies, and use the money to upgrade their digging equipment. So they can keep digging.

Whether it’s calm and cozy or existential horror probably depends on your level of claustrophobia.

The sequel doesn’t just add co-op, but adds more of everything. The game engine and gameplay loop has been rebuilt using the core of Solarpunk. Developers Mi’Pu’Mi Games are developing the sequel with blessing from original game creator, DoubleBee:

“I eventually decided to hand development over to my friends at Mi’Pu’Mi Games, who already worked on the console versions of A Game About Digging a Hole and Solarpunk,” states Ben from DoubleBee. “The goal was pretty simple: Keep the accessible, minimalist formula of the original game, but make everything around it bigger and better. There was just one small problem. The code of the first game was… not exactly built with a sequel in mind. So Mipumi basically had to rebuild the game from scratch. That also gave us the opportunity to properly build multiplayer, add crossplay and create a foundation that works across all platforms from day one.”

In the sequel, players are no longer confined to a single backyard, but an entire beach. There are multiple terrain types to dig through, and more tools and upgrades to unlock. Otherwise the basic gameplay loop remains unchanged: dig for buried treasure! It supports online co-op with up to four players, as well as crossplay between platforms.

A Game About Digging A Hole Together is coming soon to PC (Steam, Epic, Xbox), PlayStation, Switch 2, and Xbox.
