Mojang Studios, Double Eleven, and Xbox Game Studios have released action-RPG spinoff, Minecraft Dungeons 2, on PC, PlayStation, Switch 2, and Xbox. Fans aren’t too impressed, however; the game has earned a dubious ‘Mixed’ user rating on Steam, from around 5,000 reviews. Oof!
It looks like much of the complaints are around bugs and glitches, and that it doesn’t play nice with the Linux operating system. IGN scored it slightly worse than the original (6, versus a 7).
Minecraft Dungeons 2 is the sequel to the original 2020 action-RPG. In lieu of free-form exploration, building, and crafting, players adventure through procedurally generated levels battling monsters and gathering loot.
Instead of classes, players could wield different weapons, which would determine their attacks and abilities.
The original game was a simple yet effective hack and slash RPG, and the Minecraft setting made it especially attractive for younger gamers. It also works well for co-op!
Minecraft Dungeons 2 also supports online and offline co-op (also known as couch co-op) with up to four players. Plus, players can now mix and match between local couch co-op and online c-op. Progression is stored on the Minecraft Dungeons server, allowing players to carry their progress to different platforms and devices.
“From the start, our motto has been ‘one-click crossplay’, meaning a player can boot up the game for the first time and it just works,” says Stefan Annell, Technical Director on Minecraft Dungeons II. “The idea is that you should be able to play with your friends without any extra steps getting in the way, even if it means they’re on another platform.”
The sequel also features dedicated servers for smoother online play, and to prevent cheating.
Players who own the first game with the same Microsoft account can unlock the unique Hero Cape. The Hero Cape is available before December 31, 2026.
Minecraft Dungeons 2 is available on PC, PlayStation, Switch 2, and Xbox, and rated E10+.
