Indie developer Legendary Pixels has announced Kingfall, a roguelike deckbuilder coming in early 2027. The game combines the battle and management of a trading card game with the tactical movement of chess.
But what makes this game particularly noteworthy is its familial development.
Kingfall was designed by Jean-Francois Mitchell, owner of DryGin Studios, with critical help from his 10-year old son.
From their shared passion of chess and card games, the father and son team began designing a new game, including an entire physical prototype. Together, they went through the lengthy process of game design iterations, until Kingfall emerged.
“My son definitely got too much screentime from testing all the different builds, but we had a ton of fun, and we can’t wait to show it to others,” said Mitchell.
Due to the collaborative nature of its creation, Kingfall will be released under its own development label of Legendary Pixels.
Kingfall will feature over 300 cards to unlock and collect, as players fine-tune their decks and earn permanent upgrades. Battles feature a unique hybrid of card game and chess-like movement and patterns. The full game will feature a campaign, including markets and boss battles.
A free demo for Kingfall will arrive during Steam Next Fest later this month. Kingfall is due out in Q1 2027 on Steam.
