Assemble Entertainment and indie developer Novemtails are launching cozy wildlife survival game, Under Canopies, via Steam Early Access. The Early Access version of Under Canopies will release on October 23.
Under Canopies looks like a typical survival craft game, where players chop trees, cook meals, and manage their health and hunger. But it’s actually much cozier. There are no monsters or enemies, just curious wildlife. And instead of a bow and arrow, you have a Polaroid camera.
There’s something extra satisfying about that old camera sound, and dramatic shutter click.
Players will still chop trees for wood to build the log cabin of their dreams. But the goal is to live alongside nature. Raise sheep and chickens, plant and harvest crops, and explore afield for natural ingredients.
Players can also slowly form bonds with the surrounding wildlife, earning their trust while observing their lives. Photography is an important part of the gameplay loop, encouraging players to take it slow and enjoy the natural world around them.
Under Canopies is being developed by solo developer Robert Ortiz (Novemtails). According to the Steam page, it will remain in Early Access for around three months, adding new areas to explore (including an underground area), more pieces to build with, and more animals.
