Netmarble has released free-to-play RPG The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin on Steam PC, PlayStation 5, and mobile devices — and user reviews on Steam are sitting at a dubious 54% from over 8,000 ratings.
As an open world gacha RPG, Seven Deadly Sins: Origin is heavily inspired by Genshin Impact, and based on the popular anime series. As Tristan, players explore the world of Britannia to defeat nasty monsters brought on by the collision of time and space.
Players can swap characters and utilize different skills, weapons, and abilities in combat. Plus, there’s cooking, fishing, and exploring the world for hidden treasures.
Characters include fan-favorites from across the series, as well as original heroes new to Origins.
The negative user ratings are mostly tied to the gacha part of the game, and how ungenerous the game is when it comes to pulls and rewards.
A “gacha game” is monetized via purchasing (or slowly earning) pulls on a banner, with each banner including a large number of potential rewards. Characters are rare rewards, and the best characters are rarer still. Since players cannot purchase the exact character or pull they desire, the genre has been compared to digital gambling.
There are a number of free-to-play gacha games, and many have systems in place to ensure players can get what they want after a certain number of pulls.
Cross-platform progression is supported, as the game requires an outside account (though players can login as guest on mobile). See the full account linking guide for details.
The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin is rated T for Teen, with Suggestive Themes and Violence.
