As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, The Nintendo Switch 2 has sold 10.36 million units as of September 30, making it the fastest-selling Nintendo console in the first four months of launch. That’s more than double the rate of the original Switch, which sold 4.7 million units during the same period in 2017.

The Switch 2 is a huge success, marking a 110% in net sales, and nearly 20% rise in profits for the big N. Nintendo has readjusted its expected hardware sells to 19 million units for the full year.

Kind of makes my initial comparison to the Steam Deck, which is estimated at a couple million sold after three years, utterly ridiculous!

The original Switch is also still selling, with nearly 2 million units sold during the Switch 2’s launch window. The original Switch is the 3rd highest-selling console of all time, at around 154 million units, and is about to pass the Nintendo DS as #2.

The venerable PlayStation 2, which lasted a staggering 13 years (including half the lifespan of the PS3!), is still the number one console at just over 160 million units sold. Assuming Nintendo keeps manufacturing the OG Switch, we predict it will eventually become number one.

Nintendo expects full year hardware sales of the original Switch to reach 4 million.

Nintendo revealed that 84% of Switch 2 users had upgraded from the original Switch, and it’s estimated that 90% of Switch 2 owners have played Mario Kart World. Mario Kart World, the sole first-part Switch 2 exclusive at launch, sold 9.57 million units.

Switch 2 purchasers can get Mario Kart World as part of a bundle with the Switch 2. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe remains the best-selling game on the original Switch for a similar reason.

Now just imagine if Nintendo had called it the Wii 2 instead of the Wii U back in 2015.
