Story & Themes
Like previous games in the decades-long series, Mario Kart World lacks any pretext for a story. Nintendo characters from across the franchise, from Mario, Peach, and Bowser to random enemies such as Goomba and Penguin gather to race across the world and through different themed tracks.
The two primary competitive modes (online, local, and single player) are Grand Prix and Knockout Tour. Grand Prix is a familiar selection of four tracks that make up a single Cup, with players earning points for higher placing. However, for the first time in the series, players also race between tracks.
The world is fully connected, and players can also freely explore the world in the new free roam mode (single player only). While free roaming, players can discover hidden collectibles and mini-challenges, as well as gather more coins to unlock new characters and vehicles.
The other competitive mode is Knockout Tour, which takes advantage of the interconnected world by shunting players through a long series of interconnected tracks and courses, eliminating the lowest places after each checkpoint.
The art style is classic cartoony Nintendo, and the music is an exceptionally catchy mix of smooth Jazz and classic tunes from Mario platformers.
The gameplay has never been more accessible thanks to new assist options, such as Smart Steering which prevents players from running too far off the track.
Difficulty
The Mario Kart series are among the most kid-friendly video games, and Mario Kart World is exceptionally accessible with multiple options for younger gamers, including auto-accelerate, smart steering, and auto-item use. As with previous Mario Kart games, players can select 50, 100, or 150cc, which dictates the overall speed of the match, and the difficulty of the AI drivers when playing with bots.
Heads Up!
Violence Players can use items such as fireballs, shells, and hammers to hit other racers, causing them to briefly spin out.
