Publisher 505 Games and developer Infinity Plus 2 announced Puzzle Quest: Immortal Edition, launching September 18 on PC (Steam, Epic GOG), PlayStation, Switch, and Xbox.
The Immortal Edition remasters the original puzzle-RPG, Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords, including all previously released DLC, plus some new content. The remaster includes Revenge of the Plague Lord (which added new classes, quests, and a new area), and Attack of the Golem Lord from the 2019 Switch version. The Immortal Edition also adds at least one new character class, dozens of new items, and 4K artwork.
Puzzle Quest originally released in 2007 — I remember playing it on the Nintendo DS! Match-3 puzzle games were all the rage in the early days of the iPhone, and Puzzle Quest combined that gameplay with a fantasy RPG.
Players travel around the world completing quests and battling monsters, with each monster representing a Match-3 puzzle. Both sides build up their pool of resources by matching certain pieces, then unleash their unique attacks and abilities.
The successful series spawned several sequels and spin-offs over the next decade, even as the Match-3 popularity waned.
I’m a little annoyed that this version only includes the original game and not the sequels and spinoffs, including the sci-fi spinoff, Galactrix, and the full sequel, Puzzle Quest 2.
After porting the original game to Nintendo Switch in 2019, new developer Infinity Plus 2 released Puzzle Quest 3 in 2021, though it was designed as a casual, free-to-play mobile game.
Puzzle Quest: Immortal Edition will release on September 18. It’s rated E10+ with Fantasy Violence.
