During a special Paradox Interactive stream, developer Triumph Studios revealed their next game: Age of Wonders 4. It’s launching on May 2 for PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

The Age of Wonders series is a turn-based tactical strategy series that combines the 4x gameplay of Civilization with deep tactical combat between units.

For the first time in the series, players will be able to create their own custom factions by combining body shapes, social traits, and arcane powers (as well as selecting from a number of pre-designed factions). Saved creations could appear in future games as potential rivals.

Age of Wonders 4 will build upon Planetfall’s event system, injecting RPG and story elements into every game as you make important choices.

“For 25 years now, Triumph has been exploring new places to take our original fantasy strategy series, and the fans who have taken the journey with us have made it a rewarding endeavor,” said Lennart Sas, co-founder and game director, Triumph Studios. “Even after all this time, we’re still adding amazing new ideas to Age of Wonders, and whether you’ve been playing since the beginning or ready to visit our worlds for the first time, you’re about to experience something special.”

The announcement stream includes gameplay and commentary by the developers (ab0ve), a great first look at the game.

Age of Wonders 4 will actually be the sixth game in the series. A lovely sci-fi spinoff, Age of Wonders Planetfall, released in 2019. AoW4 is the first numbered sequel in nine years. The series is rated T for Teen.
