The good news: Crystal Dynamics has announced that Spider-Man will be appearing in Marvel’s Avengers as a post-launch playable hero. The bad news: he’ll only be available for those playing on the PlayStation version.

Given that Sony still maintains the media rights to Spider-Man, and games like Marvel’s Spider-Man are exclusive to PlayStation, it shouldn’t come as a big surprise. But it’s a big bummer to Marvel fans playing on PC and Xbox. The Spider-Man DLC will be free, and due to arrive sometime early next year.

“It’s never been a better time to be a spider-fan,” writes Jeff Adams, associate art director at Crystal Dynamics. “The team at Crystal Dynamics, along with our partners, are overjoyed that we get to be a part of this hero’s gaming journey.  We can’t wait for you to add Spider-Man to your Marvel’s Avengers roster in early 2021, and as we’ve promised before, he will be available at no additional cost to owners of the base game, exclusively on PlayStation.”

The Spider-Man addition will come with an event that provides unique challenges for the webslinger, as well as multiple cosmetic outfits from his storied comic history.

Marvel’s Avengers is launching September 4 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Over the next three weekends, Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix are hosting multiple beta weekends, including closed betas for pre-orders and open betas. A full open beta on all platforms will run from August 21 – 23. They previously announced the first free post-launch hero DLC as Hawkeye.

Marvel’s Avengers is rated T for Teen.
