Final Fantasy 7 Remake Now Available on PlayStation 4

Square Enix has released Final Fantasy 7 Remake today on PlayStation 4, available physically and digitally for $59.99.

Despite the name, Final Fantasy 7 Remake does not cover the entire 1997 RPG, nor is it a one-to-one remake. It re-imagines the original PS1 game into a full AAA experience, using a more real-time action combat system akin to Final Fantasy 15.

The remake covers the initial area of Midgar, as heroes Cloud, Tifa, Barret, and Aerith battle against the oppressive Shinra corporation, who controls the planet’s life force. In the original seminal RPG, the Midgar section lasted fewer than ten hours. The remake expands this area to over 30 hours, providing new details on the resistance group of Avalanche, and the villainous Sephiroth.

More episodes of Final Fantasy 7 Remake are expected to finish covering the entire scope of the original 50+ hour RPG. Release dates and titles for future episodes have not yet been announced.

You can play through the opening chapter of the remake for free via the Final Fantasy 7 Remake Demo. If you download the demo before May 11, you will receive an exclusively PS4 theme.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is rated T for Teen, with Language, Suggestive Themes, Use of Alcholol and Tobacco, and Violence. It’s available exclusively on PlayStation 4.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Shipping Early to Europe and AUS Due to COVID-19

Final Fantasy 7 Remake releases April 10, but its release is heavily impacted by the global pandemic of COVID-19. With the closure of physical stores such as GameStop and the general logistical problems with the pandemic, many physical editions may not ship on time.

To try and get ahead of any launch woes, Square Enix has announced they are shipping Final Fantasy 7 Remake “far earlier than usual to Europe and Australia.” The US copies are being shipped this week and Square Enix is “optimistic that most of you will receive the game for launch day.”

Square Enix is unable to provide exact dates on when each region will receive the game. As part of the announcement, they have a message for fans not to spoil the game before the official launch day of April 10.

If you get the game early, please think of others and don’t spoil it for them. We know there are potential spoilers that have been out there for over two decades as the original Final Fantasy 7 was released in 1997. But Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a new game that still has many surprises for everyone. All our fans and players deserve to experience the game for themselves, and we ask for that support of our dedicated community around the world to ensure that.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a big-budget remake of the seminal 90s console RPG, focusing on the early game portion that takes place in the city of Midgar. It’s coming to PlayStation 4 and rated T for teen.
