There’s no denying the incredible popularity of the Battle Royale genre in just a few short years. PUBG and Fortnite still dominate the genre (the latter becoming a cultural phenomenon). Others have tried to emulate the combination of massively multiplayer matches, seasonal events with unlockable goodies, and bankrolling microtransactions to varying degrees of success.
Enter Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, Devolver Digital’s refreshingly non-violent take on the mammoth genre. The intuitive controls, humorous art and physics, and fast-paced gameplay has my family constantly passing the controller back and forth for “just one more round.”
If you’ve been on the fence for Square Enix’s big budget co-op superhero game, Marvel’s Avengers, this weekend could be the perfect time to try it. Square Enix has been hosting beta weekends throughout the month, and from August 21 to 23, the beta will be open for all players, regardless of pre-orders or platforms. Pre-loading is available starting today, August 20.
To play the free open beta, you must register and login to a Square Enix Members account via email.
The beta includes quite a bit of content: four single player Hero Missions, three HARM Room challenges, four War Zones, and five Drop Zones. War Zones and Drop Zones are the primary co-op game modes that can be played with up to four players, or with AI companions.
All six heroes are playable: Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, and Ms. Marvel. However, Captain America and Thor are only playable during the first hero mission.
You can play missions as often as you like during the weekend, but hero levels are capped at 15, and power levels at 45. Skills are limited to the first three pages, and level progression has been artificially inflated. Microtransactions have been disabled, but you’ll receive 3,450 credits to test out the marketplace and purchase cosmetic items.
Playing the beta will earn two rewards, the Assemble Nameplate and Heroic nameplate, which will be added to your Online ID at game launch. To earn the Heroic Nameplate, you’ll need to complete all three HARM Challenges.
“Our previous beta weekends have already seen millions of gamers spend tens of millions of hours teaming up and smashing enemies as their favorite Super Heroes,” said Scot Amos, studio head, Crystal Dynamics. “We’re really looking forward to opening up the beta to anyone who wants to play on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC so they too can take the role of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.”
Marvel’s Avengers is launching September 4 on PC (Steam), PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It’s rated T for Teen.
Available On: PC (Steam), Mobile (iOS, Android), Switch
