Sure, new Pokémon and Yoshi games are nice, but one of the most exciting updates from the recent Nintendo Direct was about Stardew Valley. The beloved decade-old farm sim is coming to Switch 2 with a head-turning feature — split-screen multiplayer!

With the Switch 2 version of Stardew Valley, up to four players can play locally on the same system via split-screen. Nice! (The Switch 1 version supports up to 2 player splitscreen).

But wait, there’s more? Stardew Valley will also take advantage of the Switch 2’s unique mouse controls, via the new Joy-Con. The sim works perfectly fine with a controller (or even on mobile devices), but it’s always nice to have options.

If multiple players own a Nintendo Switch system they can play together on their own systems with only one copy of the game (hosted on a Switch 2 system) thanks to GameShare. Note that a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online play. Switch 2 owners can also freely play with Switch players.

And the best part — the new version is a free upgrade for existing owners of Stardew Valley on Nintendo Switch. No having to drop $10 (or more) on an upgrade, like several first-party Nintendo games. Except in Japan, where apparently the upgrade has to cost a minimum amount, according to developer ConcernedApe (Eric Barone).

Stardew Valley will arrive on the Nintendo Switch 2 this Fall. It’s also available on PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation, Switch, Xbox, and iOS and Android mobile devices.
