Square Enix has released Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition on PC (Steam), PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One ($19.99).
Chrono Cross is one of my personal favorite RPGs, and a classic of the golden era of 90s JRPGs. It also features one of the best soundtracks in gaming.
Chrono Cross originally launched in 1999 on the PlayStation as a sequel to Chrono Trigger (also one of the best RPGs ever made). Instead of jumping through different eras in time, players hop back and forth between two different timelines: one in which the hero lives, and another in which he died.
Protagonist Serge embarks on a grand adventure with a hilarious amount of allies — over 40, while customizing their abilities with the unique element grid magic system.
The Radical Dreamers Edition is a remaster that includes the following features:
- Swap between original 3D models and pixel font, and modern HD, with new artwork and redesigns by Nobuteru Yuuki
- Refined background music by Yasunori Mitsuda
- Switch enemy encounters on or off
- Battle enhancement features
- Auto-battle function
- Change screen resolution
- One new song and seven rearranged tracks, supervised by original composer Yasunori Mitsuda
- The inclusion of Radical Dreamers – Le Trésor Interdit -, a text-based adventure that was released between Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross.
The inclusion of Radical Dreamers is a nice treat for fans. It’s the first time the visual novel adventure has been released outside of Japan. Chrono Cross was developed as a large-scale, full RPG redesign of Radical Dreamers.
Chrono Cross is rated T for Teen, with Mild Blood, Mild Language, Mild Suggestive Themes, and Fantasy Violence.
