During the Kingdom Hearts 20th Anniversary Announcement trailer, Square Enix and Disney officially announced Kingdom Hearts 4. According to the announcement, Kingdom Hearts 4 is in early development, so don’t expect a release date any time soon.

The trailer reveals an older Sora waking up in a modern city called Quadratum. A jarring change from the usual animated Disney world settings. A gigantic heartless appears and attacks, and Sora summons the keyblade and rushes to attack it. That part is familiar, at least! The final teaser shows Donald and Goofy, Sora’s stalwart companions, searching for him in a dark tunnel.

“Sora is an original Disney video game hero like no other, beloved by our team, and fans across the world. We’ve been honored to work with Tetsuya Nomura and his team for two decades to introduce these original stories of discovery, courage, and friendship,” said Nana Gadd, Director, Walt Disney Games. “This glimpse into Sora’s next adventure is just the beginning – we can’t wait to show more when the time is right.”

As part of the same announcement trailer, Square Enix also announce a new mobile spin-off with a disappointingly normal name, Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link. Missing Link features new keyblade wielders from the realm of Scala ad Caelum as they battle Heartless and journey into the real world.

A release date for Missing Link has not been announced, but a closed beta test will run later this year for iOS and Android mobile devices.

No release date (or platforms) has been announced for Kingdom Hearts 4. Kingdom Hearts 3 was initially announced in 2013 and finally released in 2019. Hopefully the next entry doesn’t take as long.
