Marvel and NetEase Games have revealed Season 5 of popular online hero shooter, Marvel Rivals. Marvel Rivals Season 5: Love is a Battlefield will release on November 14, adding Gambit (and later, Rogue) to the roster. Plus, a new “non-combat map,” and an all-new mode featuring 36 players.
Gambit, the card-throwing sassy Cajun from the X-Men, joins the roster as a Strategist. Changing the clearly ranged-attacker into a support is certainly a choice (though the game could use more Strategists). In Rivals, his kinetic powers uses cards to heal allies, cleanse negative effects, or deal damage. He can also channel energy into his staff, while his Ultimate throws a group of cards at allies, adding a massive buff.
Rogue is also coming this season, but like other seasons, we’ll have to wait a little longer for her to show up.
Rogue and Gambit are two of my favorite characters from Marvel comics, including their tumultuous relationship.
Oh, and the reveal trailer totally teased Cyclops!
The new map is modeled after New York’s Times Square, but it’s not exactly a normal map. It’s labeled as “non-combat,” meaning it’s a place to simply hang out. The map can support up to 100 players who want to hang out as their favorite Marvel heroes.
Season 5 is also adding a new 18 vs 18 mode, Conquest Annihilation. This massive 36-player match gets its own Grand Garden map, and goes live on November 27.
Plus, we’re finally getting cross-platform progression, and more PvE Zombies content (which was introduced last season) coming next year.
The fifth season also marks the one-year anniversary for Marvel Rivals this December. After the update on November 27, players can join the special anniversary events to earn 2,500 Units (akin to $25!) and a Legendary Jeff costume. Look for more special anniversary costumes as well.
Marvel Rivals is free to play on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, and rated T for Teen.
