The recent Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase ended with two new RPG announcements from Square Enix: The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, and Octopath Traveler 0.
Both RPGs utilize the retro-inspired HD-2D art style that tickles my middle-aged gamer brain.
The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales is different from most retro RPGs by utilizing real-time action combat, a la The Legend of Zelda, or Secret of Mana. It’s set in the world of Philabieldia, where the last kingdom of humans is besieged by beastmen.
The adventure stars Elliot (duh) and his faithful fairy companion, Faie. The pair journey beyond the safety of the walls to discover ancient ruins and hidden secrets. And battle lots of monsters! Elliot can wield up to seven different weapon types, and customize their attacks and combos using magicite. Faeie can also assist in and out of battle by grabbing items and striking enemies.
The Millennium Tales is due out in 2026 on Steam PC, PlayStation 5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S. Switch 2 owners can play a free demo right now, and provide feedback through September 30. It’s rated E10+ with Fantasy Violence.
Octopath Traveler 0 is a new entry in the Ocotopath Traveler series, which helped popularize the HD-2D style. The story picks up from the mobile spinoff, Champions of the Continent, with players creating their own custom protagonist and rebuilding their hometown in the world of Orsterra.
Players who have save data from Octopath Traveler 1 and 2, Bravely Default HD Remaster, Dragon Quest 3 Remake or Dragon Quest 1 and 2 Remake can redeem bonus items.
Pre-orders will receive an in-game Support Pack with several goodies, while the Digital Deluxe Edition features several Action Skills, Consumable Growth Items, and Festive Town Decorations.
Octopath Traveler 0 will release on December 4 on Steam PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S. It’s rated T for Teen.
