Square Enix announced that spin-off RPG Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent is now available on iOS and Android mobile devices. It’s free to download.

Champions of the Continent is a prequel set several years before the events of the original game. You will travel the land of Orsterra to fight a great evil, and recruit allies along the way.

Like the original RPG, the spinoff features the beloved HD-2D pixel art combined with 3D-CG. Composer Yasunori Nishiki returns with new compositions.

While the original featured eight characters (that’s the “octo” part), Champions of the Continent features over 64 characters at launch. That’s right, it’s a gacha game. Players hope to earn and find stronger and rarer characters by earning in-game currency while playing (or purchasing with real money).

Up to eight party characters can join a single party. Players use an upgraded version of the command system combined with swipe controls to quickly engage in battle.

With pre-registration hitting over 700,000, all players can claim the following currencies in-game: 5,000 Leaves, 16 Experience Nuts (M), 20 Godl Guidestones, 1 Pursuer’s Gloves, and 300 Rubies.

Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent is available now. Don’t let the pixel art fool you; as with the original RPG, it’s rated M for Mature.
