Capcom has announced that Monster Hunter Wilds has sold over eight million copies in its first three days, making it the fastest-selling game in Capcom’s nearly 50-year history.
That’s twice as fast as the previous main entry, Monster Hunter Rise (2021), which launched exclusively on Nintendo Switch. To date, Monster Hunter World (2018), the current franchise record-holder, has sold 23 million copies since launch.
As a result, Monster Hunter producer Ryozo Tsujimoto has been promoted to Chief Product Officer, overseeing all of Capcom’s divisions. Current Chief Product Officer, Yoichi Egawa, will step down on April 1.
Monster Hunter Wilds continues the series’ tradition of hunting and battling giant boss-level monsters, and looting their parts to make better equipment. The 14 different weapon types and gameplay styles return, from slow heavy-handers like the giant sword and hammer, to the nimble dual swords, to long-range bowguns.
Wilds introduces a semi-open world with large, connected zones of free-roaming monsters. In a series first, each zone has two distinct seasons that dramatically alters the look, wildlife, and behavior of monsters.
Players also gain access to a helpful mount, the Seikret. While Monster Hunter Rise also had a mount, the Seikret can auto-follow objectives, and store a secondary weapon in its saddlebag.
Like World and Rise, Wilds fully integrates online multiplayer, allowing players to hunt monsters together with up to four players.
Capcom ended 2024 with a 33% fall in net income, though according to its 2024 financial report, this was still in-line, and earnings “made favorable progress.” Capcom’s biggest release in 2024 was Dragon’s Dogma 2.
Monster Hunter Wilds is available on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. It’s rated T for Teen.
