It’s not every day that an entirely new Pokémon is announced. So far The Pokémon Company has been teasing out details regarding this mysterious new mythical metal Pokémon. This week we learned how to properly find and capture Meltan. You’ll need to use a combination of Pokémon GO and the upcoming Switch games, Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! and Let’s Go, Pikachu, arriving November 16.
The above video shows another earnest exchange between Pokémon professors Oak and Willow. A new Mystery Box is the key to finding Meltan in the wild, as oppose to the transformed Dittos we’ve been seeing in Pokémon GO.
In order to acquire a Mystery Box, you’ll need to transfer your first Pokémon from Pokémon GO to Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee or Let’s Go, Pikachu. Normally you’ll receive items and candies for transferring Pokémon, but the first transfer will net a Mystery Box.
Once you open the box, you’ll be able to find and catch a Meltan in Pokémon GO. Like every Pokémon, a caught Meltan can then be transferred over to Let’s Go, Eevee and Let’s Go, Pikachu.
There is a catch. The Mystery Box will close after it’s been opened, and you’ll need to transfer a Pokémon from mobile to Switch to unlock it again. It’s a clever way to motivate fans to dust off the mobile app and take the plunge into Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee and Let’s Go, Pikachu.

The Pokémon Company released another teaser video showing off Meltan, this time in a real world setting. It’s cute, but also notable for the big reveal at the end, which teases a new, larger form that Meltan can evolve into.
Pokémon GO is available on iOS and Android. Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! will arrive November 16 on Switch. It’s rated E for Everyone.
