Digital Sun and publisher 11 Bit Studios announced that Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault will leave early access and fully launch on September 2 on PC, PlayStation, Switch 2, and Xbox. To celebrate, they’re offering the first Moonlighter action-RPG for free on Steam. Players can claim Moonlighter from now until August 9.

In Moonlighter 2, merchant-adventurer Will becomes stranded in a remote village. Thankfully there’s a nearby mega-dungeon, allowing Will to do his thing: explore the dungeon, collect rare treasures, and sell them in his store.

Moonlighter balances an action-RPG with a shop sim. Will explores dungeons with Zelda-like battles, puzzles, and hazards. Once his backpack is full (or he falls in battle), he returns to his store to put rare treasure up for sale and make a profit. Money is then used to expand the store (and the grow the town), as well as purchase new gear and upgrades.

The 1.0 update adds the final leg of the main story quest, as well as the final level of the shop, alongside new weapons, armor, and abilities. The Endless Vault also offers postgame challenges, as players attempt to survive the infinite dungeon.

I reviewed the original game, which used a pixel art style, back in 2018, calling it “a unique and fun combination of both action-RPG and merchant sim,” though also overly simplistic.

Moonlighter 2 is open for pre-orders on PS5 and Switch 2. The full 1.0 release is coming September 2 on PC, PlayStation, Switch 2, and Xbox. A free demo is available on all platforms.
