The rumors are true: Nintendo has officially announced a price increase (sorry, “price revision”) for the Nintendo Switch 2 console. Beginning September 1, the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) in the United States will increase from $449 to $499.
“This [price revision] is in response to various changes in market conditions, which are expected to extend over the medium to long term. We understand that pricing changes can be challenging for customers and deeply appreciate the continued enthusiasm of our fans for Nintendo products and experiences. Thank you for being part of the Nintendo community.”
Many gamers, including me, probably thought the Switch 2 was already $500. That’s because the most popular SKU of the Switch 2 comes bundled with Mario Kart World for $500. Mario Kart World alone retails for an eyebrow-raising $79.99, making the bundle a good deal.
Too good, as the Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle is mostly sold out everywhere.
Other than a bundle last fall with Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Nintendo has yet to announce any other Switch 2 game bundles. The game-less version of the Switch 2 is still widely available for $449, however. The console includes the Joy-Con 2 controller, docking station, and necessary cables.
The Switch 2 has been a big success for Nintendo, outselling the original Switch during the same time period. It’s mostly backwards compatible, and many first-party games feature upgrade packs for original Switch games, supporting increased resolution and textures. Exclusive Switch 2 games such as Donkey Kong Bananza and Pokémon Pokopia have been excellent entries in Nintendo’s storied franchises.
The new price increase goes into effect on September 1.
