During a special Pokémon Presents for Pokémon Day 2026 (Feb 27), The Pokémon Company officially announced the next main title(s) in the Pokémon series: Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves will launch exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027.
Pokémon Winds and Waves represent the 10th generation of Pokémon games, and the first new entries in the main series since Scarlet and Violet in 2023.
Wind and Waves will feature a fully open world (like Scarlet and Violet) set in and around (and beneath!) a tropical island chain, and adding our first batch of new Pokémon since Scarlet and Violet.
The announcement also revealed the three new partner Pokémon. In keeping with tradition, there’s a Grass type, Fire type, and Water type that players can choose between at the beginning of the game.
The Grass type is Browt, the Bean Chick Pokémon, which resembles a tiny, flightless bird chick. It will probably evolve into a plant-themed bird.
The Fire type is Pombon, which looks like an energetic Pomeranian dog. Stepping on Growlithe’s toes a little bit as a fire doggo, but maybe it’ll stay small and cute.
Lastly there’s the water type, Gecqua, a small reptile known as the Water Gekco Pokémon. Reptilian Water Starter types are a popular choice, with Froakie in Gen 6 and Sobble in Gen 8. Not that I’m complaining!
The reveal also teased some dress-up options for Pikachu, Mr Windychu and Ms. Wavychu. Are they inspired by Pikachu’s many special outfits found in Pokémon GO?
Pokémon Winds and Waves will launch in 2027 on Switch 2. Expect more details, including new Pokémon reveals, trickling throughout the year.
Pokémon Day Presents also confirmed multiplayer for Pokopia, announced Pokémon Champions for Switch, revealed the Pokémon World Championships 2026, and kicked off the release of FireRed and LeafGreen on the Nintendo eShop.
