The oldest of old school MMORPGs, RuneScape, is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2026. UK-based developer Jagex has revealed an ambitious new roadmap with lots of updates and improvements, as well as the MMO’s biggest expansion yet.
The new quality-of-life changes were presented in a new RuneScape 2026 Roadmap video (above), with the rather melodramatic title, “The Roadmap that Changes RuneScape Forever.”
Dubbed “The Road to Restoration,” Jagex commits to updating the UI and visuals, modernizing the combat, supporting API plugins, and rebalancing the entire game, all within the calendar year. This roadmap will exist alongside the developer’s usual release of new content.
The developer is also looking to directly incorporate player feedback. For example, the Treasure Hunter daily activities have been completely removed following a community vote in November 2025.
Other big changes include an overhaul to character models, animations, and more updates based on player feedback to avatars. Player-owned houses will be expanded, unlocking a new recipe system where players can craft and place furniture.
This year will also see the release of RuneScape’s biggest expansion ever, Journey to Havenhythe. The expansion will add the “progressively vampiric Havenhythe” alongside new quests, early-game bosses, and more. The expansion is scheduled to release in multiple parts throughout the year.
RuneScape originally launched back in 2001, before the MMO genre really blew up in the mid-2000s, and has seen decades of updates. It released on Steam in 2020.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds is an open world survival crafting spinoff currently in Steam Early Access.
RuneScape is available on PC, Steam, and iOS and Android mobile devices. It’s rated T for Teen.
