I’m sorry about the headline, but it’s true, Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past released in 2000 on the PlayStation, and that was 25 years ago. The good news is, the classic JRPG is getting a full 3D remake from Square Enix. Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined will release Feb. 5, 2026 on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, Switch, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S.

Dragon Quest 7 is a gigantic time-traveling RPG across a chain of islands. The remake pledges to “provide a more streamlined story experience,” while “remaining faithful to the original story.”

The character designed, by beloved anime artist Akira Toriyama, have been rebuilt in 3D, based on actual dolls. The world design and dungeons were created using a diorama-style aesthetic, as well as a resigned UI for a smoother experience.

The turn-based battle system also received an update. Characters can now “let loose” after a time, and each character can now use up to two Vocations at once. Plus, a new Vocation has been added, Monster Master, which features monster summoning.

Note that it’s not the first time Dragon Quest 7 received a remake. I loved the 2016 remake on the Nintendo 3DS, though it took an annoyingly long time to open up and unlock the Vocation system. Hopefully that gets streamlined!

Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined will be available in Standard, Digital Deluxe, and a Collector’s Edition. The Digital Deluxe Edition ($74.99) includes 48 hours of Early Access, one unique costume for Ruff, and three DLC packs at launch.

The pricey Collector’s Edition ($249.99) features the physical game in a Steelbook Case, Smile Slime Plush, Ship in a Bottle Figure, and the DLC in the Digital Deluxe Edition.

Pre-order bonuses include Trodain Togs, Seeds of Prophecy, and a Red Slime Shield.

Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined is rated E10+.
