Square Enix announced that Foamstars will transition to a free-to-play model on October 3. In other words, players will no longer require a PlayStation Plus subscription. Foamstars is exclusively on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

Current players (and those who download and play before Oct. 3) will receive a bonus Legacy Gift upon the transition. The Legacy Gift includes 12 color-variant Bubble Beastie skins, one Slideboard design, and the Legacy title.

Foamstars season seven, Golden Beats, is ongoing, adding new character Bublo (premium season pass) and new seasonal events.

Foamstars launched earlier this year as Sony’s answer to Splatoon. Players square off in 4v4 teams as they spray foam at the battlefield to coat more of the area in their team’s colors. Unlike Splatoon, players play specific characters with their own weaponry and special powers.

Reception has been middling at best, though Foamstars has carved out a tiny niche over the last few months. Opening up more players by going free-to-play is the right move, though it probably needs to launch on additional platforms to really stay afloat.

Foamstars is online only and currently requires a PlayStation Plus subscription. It will be fully free to download on October 3 for all PlayStation users. It’s rated T for Teen.
