The 3.2 update for infamous crafting-exploration game No Man’s Sky introduces companions. The Companions update adds pets and mounts, including breeding, trading, and customization.

“Our little Hello Games team had a big year in 2020, releasing six huge, free updates for No Man’s Sky. We are even more excited for what 2021 has in store,” says Sean Murray, Founder, Hello Games. “Today, we’re very pleased to release our first major update of 2021: Companions.”

Travelers now have the ability to adopt any bizarre alien creature they feed. Companions will travel with you throughout the universe, and you can instantly summon them to your side. They can be trained to scan and harvest resources, provide light, find treasure, and defend against other dangerous creatures. Larger creatures can even be ridden like mounts.

Each creature has a unique personality defined by their species and the planet they’re from. You can shape their personalities by the tasks they perform, and how often they’re fed, petted, and played with. A creature can send its emotional thoughts through your Exosuit for feedback, and they’ll respond to gestures.

If well taken care of, your companions can also lay eggs. Using the new Egg Sequencer at the Space Anomaly, you can genetically modify eggs to create even more unique species. Eggs can also be traded between players.

Other 3.2 improvements include improved load times on PlayStation 4 and keyboard hotkeys during dialogue on PC. No Man’s Sky is available on PC (Steam), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. It’s rated T for Teen.
