Square Enix announced that the feature-length, CG-animated film Dragon Quest Your Story has arrived on Netflix (and in English). The trailer is available through Netflix.

The film was produced by Toho and supervised by original Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii, and originally released in Japan in 2019. It’s based on Dragon Quest 5: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. Here is the official story description:

Dragon Quest Your Story tells the tale of Luca as he follows in his father’s footsteps to rescue his beloved mother from the evil grips of Ladja, a high-ranking member of an organization known as The Order of Zugzwang. Failure is not an option as Luca uses the power of magic while battling monsters in his search for the Zenithian sword and the Legendary Hero, his only hope for success.

Dragon Quest 5 originally released back in 1992 in Japan on the Super Famicom. It wouldn’t be available to western audiences until a Nintendo DS remake released in 2009, and later on mobile devices in 2015.

The entire Dragon Quest series is notable for popularizing the JRPG genre, but DQ5 in particular included groundbreaking features like befriending and collecting monsters, optional AI scripts for companions, and being able to marry and sire children. Dragon Quest 5 is often considered one of the best, if not the best Dragon Quest game, which is saying something in a venerable series that recently saw its 11th release with the excellent Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age in 2018.

Dragon Quest Your Story is streaming now on Netflix in both English dubbed and English subtitles with original Japanese voice acting. It’s rated TV-PG.
