Ever since its launch last Summer Pokémon GO fans have been clamoring for Niantic Inc to expand the roster. In December a handful of select Pokémon from Generation 2 (Pokémon Gold and Silver) could be hatched from eggs. Now, finally, Niantic has announced that over 80 new Gen 2 Pokémon will be added to Pokémon GO. The massive update is coming later this week.

“Today is a momentous occasion for Pokémon GO as we welcome more Pokémon and build upon the encounter and capture mechanics for the passionate global community of Trainers playing the game,” said John Hanke, founder and CEO of Niantic, Inc. “Pokémon GO is a live experience which we’ll be continuing to support and evolve in new and interesting ways for years to come.”

The new Pokémon can be found in the wild alongside their Gen 1 cousins. Since Gen 2 added 100 new Pokémon, nearly all of them will be added to Pokémon GO “later this week.” Most likely the Legendary Pokémon and upper tiers are being held back.

The Gen 2 update also adds new Berry items, evolution items, and customization options for trainers.

The new Berries are the Nanab and Pinab. The Nanab Berry slows a Pokémon, making them easier to catch during an encounter. The Pinap Berry doubles the amount of Candy you receive – if you catch it on your next throw.

New Evolution items will let you evolve Pokémon into Gen 2 Pokémon. New Trainer accessories include hats, shirts, pants and other items, many of which will be available for purchase in the in-game shop.

“The amazing response to Pokémon GO by millions of existing and new Pokémon fans around the world is remarkable,” said J.C. Smith, Senior Direct at The Pokémon Company. “We’re thrilled to keep the adventure going by welcoming these Pokémon to this engaging new way of experiencing the fun of the Pokémon brand.”
