Her Story May Get a Sequel

Posted by | News | No Comments

Sam Barlow, the one-man developer of the hit game, Her Story, posted a “one-pager” on what’s titled Her Story 2 on Twitter earlier this morning. You can only see the title on the page. Everything else is blurred out. You can see the cryptic message below.

Barlow responded to fans asking about the game that the new version would have “no relation story-wise to Her Story.” Needless to say we’re all intrigued.

Her Story has become a darling of the indie game scene. Its unique gameplay and complicated narrative has resonated with fans and critics alike. Just about everyone who’s played the game has continued to sing its praises. The game won the award for Best Narrative at The Game Awards and has been nominated for the Game Developers Choice Awards and the DICE Awards. If you’re interested in learning more about the possible sequel you may want to follow Barlow on Twitter.

British Writer’s Guild Honors Unsettling English Games Like Everybody’s Gone To The Rapture

Posted by | News | No Comments

The British Writer’s Guild has decreed Everybody’s Gone To The Rapture as the winner of its video game writing award.

Other nominees included Her Story and Sunless Sea, which are likewise powerful and creepy stories.

Everybody’s Gone To The Rapture was written by Dan Pinchbeck and developed by a small team at The Chinese Room. It’s a meditative and impactful game. You can read Keezy Young’s review right here.

One of the most interesting things about these three nominees is that they all tell their stories in a manner that isn’t quite traditionally linear. Everybody’s Gone To the Rapture has chapters, but you can move through each individual section however you want.

Sunless Sea is a roguelike that lets you explore a vast undersea world at your leisure. And the order of Her Story’s narrative depends entirely on how the player chooses to explore it.

You can check out the full list of nominees for all of the British Writer’s Guild awards right here. Other categories include radio, film, and television. Russel T. Davies was honored as well, for his contributions to television in the original “Queer as Folk,” and the 2005 revitalization of “Doctor Who.”

(The Writers Guilds of America’s nominees for their own awards trend toward the AAA instead of indie titles, with Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Pillars of Eternity, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and The Witcher 3 leading the nominations.)

Independent Games Festival Finalists Announced

Posted by and | News | No Comments

Independent games are often crowded out of the spotlight by bigger games. But some of these independent games are fantastic. The Independent Games Festival tries to bring some much-needed attention to some of the great work done in indie games. They’ve just announced their finalists for the 18th annual awards.

The winners of the IGF Awards will be announced at a ceremony taking place place on Wednesday, March 16 at San Francisco’s Moscone Convention Center. Nathan Vella, co-founder and president of Capybara Games, will host. The Game Developers Choice Awards, which recognizes the best games of the year across game development categories, will be following immediately thereafter.

Winners will receive over $50,000 of prizes, including the $30,000 Seumas McNally Grand Prize.

Attendees will also be able to play the games chosen and speak with devs at the IGF Pavilion during the Game Developers Conference (March 16 to March 18), and will get the chance to take part in the Independent Games Summit (March 14 to March 15) for networking and learning opportunities.
