It’s a big day for Destiny. Bungie, now an independent studio, released the next expansion content for Destiny 2, Shadowkeep. At the same time, the base game is being made available to everyone as a free-to-play title called Destiny 2: New Light.
“During 2019, we’ve developed and shared a clarity of vision we’ve never had before in Destiny. We’re finally going to make the Destiny 2 we’ve always wanted to make—one world that you and your friends are going to meaningfully change and make memories in,” wrote Luke Smith, Destiny Game Director in a note to the Bungie player community. “October 1st is the first step toward what we want Destiny 2 to become. This isn’t just the next chapter of Destiny 2, but the next chapter of us. We’re just getting started.”
Destiny 2: New Light is designed as an entry point for new players. New Light is the original Destiny 2 with all its modes, activities, and rewards. Players can also join the first campaign mission of the Shadowkeep expansion.
Destiny 2: Shadowkeep is the first major expansion release for Destiny 2. Guardians are reunited with a familiar ally from the original game, Eris Morn. Together they will return to Earth’s Moon, which has been twisted and reshaped by previous trials, to confront new threats. Shadowkeep is delivered as a stand-alone, complete product.
Bungie also unveiled the next seasonal content rolling out for Destiny 2, Season of the Undying, which is included with Shadowkeep. While the Guardians race to battle on the Moon, a race of time-traveling war machines called the Vex have awakened. Naturally they are none too friendly.
Destiny 2 has recently become available on Steam as part of Bungie ending its nearly 10-year partnership with Activision-Blizzard, and Destiny 2 becoming no longer available on Blizzard’s Battle.net digital store. Owners of the PC version will be able to migrate their progress to the Steam version at no cost.
To further unify the Destiny fan-base, Destiny 2 will be given Cross Save support on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One later this fall. Destiny 2 is also coming to Google Stadia later this fall.
