Square Enix’s upcoming action game Marvel’s Avengers may have been highly anticipated at one point, but things cooled off after a lackluster E3 showing and character designs that made us painfully aware that Square Enix didn’t have access to the MCU actors.

During Gamescom 2019 this week, Square Enix released a full 20-minute gameplay demo. The demo shows off the original Avengers, Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Black Widow (sorry Hawkeye) as they battle an invading army lead by the villainous Taskmaster. These events take place during the prologue and serve as tutorials for how each hero plays and controls. The demo was also playable on the show floor.

The level of violence seems a tad exaggerated compared to the staunchly PG-13 Marvel Cinematic Universe, however. I’m pretty sure Hulk and Thor are killing those enemies (Hulk especially).

Although based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel’s Avengers tells a completely original story. The prologue begins on A-Day, with the Avengers unveiling their new Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco and their own high-powered hellicarrier. The day is upended in tragedy as armed forces attack, leading to a catastrophic event that leaves one of the superhero team seemingly dead, and leading the world to ban superheroes as the real story begins five years later. Avengers Re-assemble?

Marvel’s Avengers is a third-person action-adventure game developed by Crystal Dynamics (Tomb Raider) featuring an original single player campaign as well as co-op missions for up to four players.

Marvel’s Avengers will launch on May 15, 2020 on PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox One, and Google Stadia. It has not yet been rated by the ESRB.
