Mob Entertainment has released Escape from Playtime, a co-op extraction survival game, via Steam Early Access. It’s available now with a 10% launch discount through November 4.

Escape from Playtime takes place in the horror world of Poppy Playtime (which was inspired by Five Nights at Freddy’s), and acts as a prequel to the main story.

To catch up on the lore, Mob Entertainment has released a short Everything You Need to Know video.

Up to eight players play as the Smiling Critters, creepy little stuffies that act as henchmen in the abandoned toy factory. As a mysterious voice promises them freedom, players must do its bidding by scavenging for resources, completing missions, and avoiding bigger, more dangerous enemies.

The factory floor is constantly changing, creating new paths, tools, resources, and enemies. Like many co-op horror games, Escape from Playtime utilizes proximity voice chat, drawing in enemies if players are too loud, while still needing to communicate with one another.

The Early Access version includes all eight Smiling Critters (four are unlocked through progression), one starter zone, and the main enemy types. The developers are planning at least a year in Early Access, with regular content updates.

Players can download the Founder’s Pack for free in the next 30 days. The Founder’s Pack includes alternate skins for all eight Smiling Critters.

“With Escape From Playtime, we wanted to explore a lesser-known chapter of Playtime Co.’s history and give players a completely new perspective on this world,” said Brandon James, Game Director, Mob Entertainment. “For longtime fans, there are plenty of familiar faces and lore connections to discover, but we’ve also deliberately made this an experience that newcomers can jump into and enjoy without knowing anything about Poppy Playtime. It’s a new way into the story, no matter where you’re starting from.”
