Solo developer Replicant D6 has released Agent 64: Spies Never Die on Steam. Agent 64 is a first-person shooter directly inspired by the late 90s era of Nintendo 64 shooters. Namely: the gaming juggernauts GoldenEye 007 (1997), and Perfect Dark (2000), both developed by Rare.
Starring stereotypical secret agent, John Walter, Agent 64 features a full 14-mission single player campaign that can also be played cooperatively. In each mission, players can complete objectives in any order, and unlock additional difficulty levels — which then feature more areas to explore and objectives to complete.
Gamers of a certain age (of which I am one!) have a huge amount of nostalgia for late 90s console shooters, offering some of the best pre-Halo console multiplayer experiences outside of Nintendo.
To that end, Agent 64 also offers four-player local split-screen multiplayer matches, and up to eight players with online deathmatch (plus bots!). All the different match modes, as well as dozens of silly cheat codes and modifiers from yesteryear (Big heads, slappers only, etc) have been replicated.
“Calling a game a love letter to the ‘90s sounds a bit cliché, but I think there’s no better way to describe Agent 64,” said Replicant D6. “It’s a brand new experience for gamers who never played Rare’s N64 masterpieces, and instantly familiar territory for anyone raised on the classics, while modernizing a beloved formula.”
Agent 64: Spies Never Die is available with a launch discount of 11% off on Steam. Hopefully we’ll also see it on consoles some day, too!
