Since its release in early June, indie party game Meccha Chameleon has rocketed up the Steam Charts. Just a few weeks after launch, the game of colorful hide and seek has sold over 10 million copies, and currently sits among the top five most played games on the entire gaming platform, with around 200,000 concurrent players.
It’s a runaway success story for indie Japanese developer, Lemorion1224. Also a dev of a few words: “We hit 10 million sales! Thank you so much for your support!”
Meccha Chameleon is a low-budget, online multiplayer party game (also affectionately called friendslop), where players compete in a game of hide and seek. But there’s a colorful twist. Each player is a blank white canvas humanoid — with a full suite of painting tools.
Teams divide between hiders and seekers. Seekers have to find the hiders within the time limit in order to win, otherwise the hiders win.
Thanks to the painting system, hiders can choose to hide anywhere in the environment (which offers a variety of colors, patterns, and textures), then use the painting tools to paint their body into the background. Creativity + artistry + a bit of luck!
The simple but funny competitive gameplay, simplistic graphics that anyone can run, and extremely low price tag has helped catapult Meccha Chameleon to incredible success. Not to mention its popularity with streamers and Twitch integration. Streamers can even host games with viewers.
Meccha Chameleon is not currently on sale during the Steam Summer Sale. But, I mean, come on, it’s $6.
