Sony has announced the free games coming to PlayStation Plus subscribers for the month of May, and they’re well worth checking out.
First is Ark: Survival Ascended, for PlayStation 5. Survival Ascended is the HD remaster of dino-themed survival crafting game, Ark: Survival Evolved. Starting off naked on an island of primeval creatures, players must cook, craft, build, hunt, and tame their way toward survival and success. Players must balance their health, hunger, inventory, and stamina while constructing a base, and even taming and mounting their own dinosaurs. Ark can be played solo, but is most popular co-op with friends, and on shared servers with up to 70 players.
The HD remaster is still in Early Access, and rebuilds the 2017 game with Unreal Engine 5. Survival Ascended also includes all the DLC from Survival Evolved as it releases.
Belatro is a great addition to anyone’s library, and will be available for free for PlayStation Plus subscribers on PS4 and PS5. Belatro is the incredibly popular roguelike deckbuilder cleverly inspired by the world’s most popular card game — poker. This solo version of poker has players using decks of different cards to complete blinds and rounds. Between games players can purchase additional cards for their deck. Special abilities, bonuses, and card combos come from powerful Joker cards, and allow players to break the normal rules in increasingly satisfying ways.
I’m admittedly less familiar with the third game this month, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun. Warhammer games are a dime a dozen and come in a variety of genres and styles. Boltgun is an old-school first-person shooter a la Doom. The graphics and style look straight out of the early 90s — in a good way! According to fans, Boltgun is one of the best Warhammer games ever made, and a great foray into the retro genre. Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is available on PlayStation 4 and 5.
PlayStation Plus monthly games for May will be free to download for subscribers beginning May 6.
