Dreamhaven and developer Secret Door have released Sunderfolk, a co-op RPG inspired by tabletop gaming. It’s out now on PC (Steam), PlayStation, Switch, and Xbox ($49.99).

Sunderfolk’s aim is to recreate a tabletop RPG game session, such as Dungeons & Dragons, using a big screen (and several small ones).

Instead of controllers, up to four local players use their phones (via a QR code) to control their character and manage their inventory and abilities. Sunderfolk can also be played as a solo experience.

The fantasy world of the Sunderlands is home to many animal-races and distinct classes, including Arcanist, Bard, Berserker, and Ranger. Each class has its own strengths and playstyles.

Tactical combat plays on a hexagonal battlefield. Players take turns playing Skill Cards to execute their abilities (similar to Gloomhaven). By completing missions and earning experience, players unlock more cards to customize their loadout. As players progress, their hometown of Arden will feature more vendors and upgrades for equipment.

“As lifelong tabletop fans, it’s a dream come true to launch Sunderfolk as a bridge between the world of tabletop role-playing games and co-op video games,” said Chris Sigaty, studio head, Secret Door. “We hope to foster new communities, spark shared stories, and watch players create lasting memories of camaraderie and adventure in the Sunderlands.”

Sunderfolk is rated E10+.
