During The Game Awards 2024, appropriately-named indie studio Tactical Adventures announced Solasta 2. The sequel will launch first on Steam Early Access in 2025.

Solasta 2 is set decades after the events of the first game, Solasta: Crown of the Magister, in the new region of Neokos. The new cinematic trailer shows off the villainous Shadwyn (voiced by Amelia Tyler from Baldur’s Gate 3!) and her rocky minions as they sweep across the world.

We’re going to need some heroic adventurers!

Creative Director Mathieu Girard has a lot say about the sequel:

Our team of 35 combines deep expertise with a passion for crafting immersive and challenging gaming experiences. With our first game, we started as a Kickstarter success story, building on the SRD 5.1 ruleset to create a tactical RPG that has resonated with over 1.5 million players. Now, with Solasta 2, we’re taking all that even further – pushing the system with fresh takes on tactical depth, fun and accessibility. Players will explore Neokos, a new continent brimming with magic, colossal landscapes and discover unprecedented lore, while facing the growing force of Shadwyn, a charismatic villain driven by a relentless desire to reclaim her lost power.

This project is powered by ambition, respect for our players and a shared belief in the strength of what we’re building together. We can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it and tell us what they think!

“SRD 5.1 ruleset” refers to the Fifth Edition of Dungeons & Dragons. Solasta wasn’t perfect, but it was praised for its adaptation of the Dungeons & Dragons classes, monsters, and rules. One of Solasta’s best qualities is four-player co-op multiplayer, just like a proper D&D campaign.

However, Solasta doesn’t have the IP rights to the Forgotten Realms, the popular D&D setting that Baldur’s Gate 3 uses (though BG3 is much less faithful to the actual D&D rules). Solasta has orcs, elves, and wizards, but no Waterdeep, Elminster, or Beholders.

Solasta was really lacking when it came to storytelling. Hopefully centering the sequel around a charismatic villain is a good start. The visuals already look way better!

Solasta 2 will launch in 2025, with a playable demo “coming soon.” Solasta: Crown of the Magister is available on PC, Mac, PlayStation, and Xbox, and rated T for Teen.
