Square Enix released Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, an awkwardly named but lovely remake of a classic RPG. Dragon Quest 3 is out now on PC (Steam, Microsoft Store), PlayStation 5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.

The HD-2D refers to the increasingly popular retro art style that combines 2D pixel characters with 3D backgrounds. The unique combination gives new games a classic 80s/90s RPG feel, and elevates older games with a fresh but nostalgic style.

Other improvements include full English and Japanese voice acting, autosaves, improved animations, adjustable battle speed, and more. The orchestral soundtrack is composed by Koichi Sugiyama and performed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony.

Dragon Quest 3 originally released in 1988 in Japan, and 1992 in North America. Like other games in the series, it features a cast of heroes on a quest to defeat a great evil in a fantasy world. DQ 3 also features a class system for party members, swapping different classes and builds such as wizard, fighter, merchant, or sage.

It’s the third game in the Erdrick trilogy (from the first two games) but it’s actually a prequel to the first Dragon Quest.

Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake is coming next year, allowing fans to play through the remakes chronologically.

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is out now, and rated E10+.
