Indie developer Airship Syndicate released Wayfinder, a co-op action-RPG born out of a failed MMORPG, on Steam PC and PlayStation 4/5 ($24.99). Xbox version is arriving later this month, and all versions support cross-platform play.

Earlier this year, the developer reacquired the rights to Wayfinder from publisher Digital Extremes after the online, free-to-play MMORPG after a poor launch. Wayfinder then entered Early Access, changing from a free online game to a premium co-op RPG.

The world, art design, and skills are inspired by MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft. But the focus on fast-paced combat and dungeon-crawling is closer to an action-RPG such as Diablo. Plus, a newly revamped loot system features randomized loot to customize your heroes.

Wayfinder features eight different heroes with their own skills and style, including a new arrival in 1.0, Lora the Vessel.

Players can journey through the campaign and explore Lost Zones in solo or 3-player co-op. The Crucible is a new open world region with its own Lost Zone dungeons and hookshot traversal.

It’s impressive to see a game pivot after failure. I’m also a big fan of one-time buy, straightforward co-op games (hello, Borderlands!) over yet another online game filled with microtransactions.

Wayfinder is available now on PC and PlayStation. It’s rated T for Teen.
