During the May PlayStation State of Play, developer Firewalk Studios revealed Concord, a 5v5 multiplayer shooter launching on PC and PlayStation 5 on August 23.

Multiplayer shooters are a dime a dozen, but Concord uses cinematic storytelling and characters normally seen in single-player RPGs.

Players form a team of Freegunners, mercs for hire, in the sci-fi universe of Concord. Characters include spell-slinging mystics to hulking brutes, quick-footed snipers, and lumbering robots. At launch, Concord will feature 16 playable Freegunners.

Each Freegunner specializes in different weaponry, tactics, and skills, such as deploying walls, laying traps, or hurling explosives.

So, Overwatch, basically?

But the developers promise a more intimate look at characters and a fleshed-out universe and ongoing storyline. The fun cinematic trailer (above) certainly feels like a single-player action-RPG. The ragtag crew is part of a ship called the Northstar, and they’re fiercely loyal (and snarky) to one-another.

It’s Overwatch meets Guardians of the Galaxy!

Through post-launch updates, we’ll meet new Freegunners, maps, and modes, as well as watch cinematic vignettes that explore characters’ personalities and relationships. It definitely feels like the developers were paying attention to what fans wanted out of Overwatch!

Pre-order details will come next week, and include early access to the beta running this summer.

Concord will release on August 23 on PC and PlayStation 5. It’s rated T for Teen.
