Ubisoft has released free-to-play online multiplayer shooter XDefiant on PC (Ubisoft Connect), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

XDefiant could be the start of the Ubisoft Cinematic Universe, as it pits factions from various Ubisoft games against one another in competitive 6v6 game modes. Factions include Phantoms (from Ghost Recon), Cleaners (from The Division) and DedSec (from Watch Dogs). Each faction features unique traits, abilities, and ultimate skills.

At launch the game will include five factions, 14 maps, and five game modes, including standard domination as well as escort and zone control.

As a free-to-play game, XDefiant is supported by microtransactions, such as an optional Battle Pass (popularized by Fortnite). The developer has pledged to avoid “pay to win” mechanics, promising that “any gameplay impacting content that is purchasable is also unlockable through challenges to ensure fair play amongst our community.”

Microtransactions will be limited to cosmetics and skins (including weapons, characters, animations, and more), as well as faction unlocks. For example, the DedSec faction must be purchased to unlock.

Pretty standard stuff, really.

XDefiant begins with the Preseason Battle Pass, which features 50 tiers of rewards in free and premium tracks.

Players can also purchase Founder’s Packs to get a head-start on unlocks, including the DedSec Faction. The Founder’s Pack Elite includes the Preseason Battle Pass, while the Ultimate Pack also includes all Year One Faction unlocks.

XDefiant is rated T for Teen.
