Marvel Rivals is a team-based, competitive shooter developed by NetEase Games and coming to PC. Hopeful players can sign up today to get into the first Closed Alpha Test, taking place in May. Watch the new announcement trailer above.

Judging from the trailer, Marvel Rivals looks like Overwatch, Blizzard’s successful hero shooter from 2016 (and Overwatch 2), but in third-person.

“Hero Shooter,” refers to a competitive player-versus-player genre where players select distinct characters with their own unique weapons and abilities. Think of them as a combination of MOBAs and Call of Duty. Other examples include Apex Legends and Valorant.

Marvel Rivals will feature 6v6 team matches. The two things that set it apart are the destructible environments, and hero synergies. By using explosive superpowers, players can reshape the battlefield, and create new cover or improvised weapons.

Hero synergies combine the abilities of different characters at the same time, such as Hulk charging up Iron Man’s armor with Gamma energy, or Rocket Racoon riding on Groot.

The roster already features a good mix of familiar MCU characters such as Spider-Man, Iron Man, Hulk, and Scarlet Witch, alongside lesser known figures like Magik, Namor, and Luna Snow. Villains are also included, with Magneto and Loki to start.

“Marvel Rivals is one of our most ambitious game development projects. Since the conceptualization of the game and throughout our collaboration, our Marvel team has poured our hearts and souls into this project, and we are thrilled to work with the incredible team at NetEase Games to help deliver the ultimate Super Hero Team-Based PVP Shooter,” said Jay Ong, Head of Marvel Games.

Marvel Rivals Closed Alpha Test will only be available on PC. Release dates and other platforms have not yet been announced.
