In a public note to investors, Nintendo has confirmed rumors that a film of The Legend of Zelda is in development.

The live-action film will be co-financed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment. Nintendo will finance more than 50% of the production, while Sony will handle the theatrical distribution.

Gaming luminary, father of Mario and Zelda, and Nintendo bigwig Shigeru Miyamoto will produce the film, alongside Hollywood veteran Avi Arad, of Arad Productions.

Arad is the former CEO and founder of Marvel Studios. His film credits include Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and Uncharted, a live-action film based on a video game series. He’s currently working on the Borderlands and Metal Gear Solid live-action films.

By producing visual contents of Nintendo IP by itself, Nintendo is creating new opportunities to have people from around the world to access the world of entertainment which Nintendo has built, through different means apart from its dedicated game consoles.

By getting deeply involved in the movie production with the aim to put smiles on everyone’s faces through entertainment, Nintendo will continue its efforts to produce unique entertainment and deliver it to as many people as possible.

Alongside Mario, The Legend of Zelda is one of the most recognizable series in gaming, debuting in 1986, and most recently in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which released earlier this year.

The brief note includes zero details or teases about the film. The Zelda universe is full of multiple timelines and eras. Let the speculation begin!
