During the PlayStation State of Play, Square Enix announced open beta plans for Splatoon-like, team-based online shooter Foamstars.

The full game will release next year, but if you have a PlayStation 5, you can try the open beta as early as September 29.

The open beta will take place during the weekend of September 29, beginning at 6pm Pacific/9pm Eastern. It will be available until October 1 at 11:59pm Pacific (or 3 am Eastern on October 2).

In a nice gesture, you will not need to be a PlayStation Plus subscriber in order to join the open beta. Simply download the open beta version from the PlayStation Store.

The open beta will also double as a network test, so expect some latency and connectivity issues.

The beta will feature two game modes: Smash the Star, and Happy Bath Survival.

Both modes are variations of classic team deathmatch, with teams of four facing off and accruing takedowns.

When enough takedowns have been made in Smash the Star, a single player on each team becomes the star player, and once that player is taken down, the other team wins.

Happy Bath Survival splits the teams into two different areas. Those on the inner ring must battle each other in close quarters, while the outer ringers can fire their weapons and abilities to help or hinder players in the inner ring.

Foamstars is clearly modeled after Splatoon, with foam in place of paint. Players can choose among eight unique characters, all of who can slide and glide their way along the foam, or use it to form walls and cover.

Foamstars is due out early 2024 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
