The official Borderlands Twitter account announced that a new Tales from the Borderlands game is coming in 2022. This new sequel will be developed directly by Gearbox. A more detailed announcement will follow later this summer.

The original Tales from the Borderlands was developed by Telltale Games. It followed their usual episodic, narrative-rich adventure game format, but set within the Borderlands universe.

The five episodes released between 2014 and 2015, and are widely considered one of the best adventure game series Telltale ever produced. The series starred original characters in a zany plot that touched on many elements, areas, and characters from the main series.

Gearbox has officially acknowledged the licensed spin-off, through the free Borderlands 2 DLC, Commander Lilith and the Fight for Sanctuary. Main characters Vaughn and Rhys also appear in Borderlands 3.

Fans are nervous about Gearbox taking over the writing and design of the beloved adventure series. But with Telltale’s abrupt closure in 2018, this was probably the only way we were going to see a sequel. Whether or not this upcoming sequel will continue the story, or feature a new story and characters, remains to be seen.

One thing remains true: if you enjoy the Borderlands series, you need to play the original Tales from the Borderlands. You can find it as a single package with all five episodes on PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One.
