Humanity finally won the war against the occupying alien force in XCOM 2. XCOM: Chimera Squad is a new spin-off that takes place five years after the war, starring a tactical force made up of both humans and aliens as they respond to threats around City 31. It’s launching April 24 on PC (Steam) for $9.99 (50% discount through May 1, normal price = $19.99).

Like the main XCOM series, Chimera Squad is a squad-based tactical strategy game, but with some key differences. Instead of recruiting and leveling randomly generated soldiers, Chimera Squad is made up of a pre-written squad of characters, many of who are shown in the trailer above. The squad includes the leader Godmother, a human ranger, as well as Blueblood the human gunslinger, Terminal the human medic, and Verge the sectoid envoy. Details of each member of the squad can be found at the official website.

There is no permadeath in Chimera Squad – if one of your soldiers bleeds out, it’s game over. The scale is also different. Instead of defending the entire planet, you’re responding to threats around a single city. If unrest grows too big, the city will be lost to chaos, and the game will end in defeat.

Each of the different humans and aliens represent a different class and skillset, including unique skill trees as they advance.

XCOM: Chimera Squad is launching April 24 on Steam. A special 50% discount is available through May 1. It’s rated T for Teen.
