Grab Another Free Game from the GOG Winter Sale

Posted by | News, PC | No Comments

Two weeks in and the annual GOG Winter Sale has offered another free game. For the next 48 hours you claim underwater horror adventure SOMA for free, simply by having an account and clicking the button. You’ll have until December 30 at 3 am Pacific/6 am Eastern to claim the free game.

SOMA is a first-person horror adventure developed by indie studio Frictional Games, creators of the Amnesia series. You’ll journey through an underwater installation where Things Went Horribly Wrong. Explore the area, avoid homicidal robots and monsters, and solve the mystery of the station, and yourself.

SOMA was very well-received by critics and fans of the genre. It has an 83 rating on Opencritic, putting in the top 10% of reviewed games on the site. SOMA is rated M for Mature with Violence, Blood, Nudity, and Strong Language.

The GOG Winter Sale still features thousands of deeply discounted PC games. GOG’s store features a solid combination of PC gaming classics from the 90s (King’s Quest, Might and Magic, Ultima, etc.), as well as modern indie games like Into the Breach, Dead Cells, and Pillars of Eternity 2. A rotating list of Daily Deals feature the best discounts and deals.

Spending any amount of money during the sale will reward Fantasy General as a free game. Spend at least $15 to acquire Everspace as a free bonus game.

The GOG Winter Sale ends on Jan. 3, 2019.

The Steam Winter Sale Has Arrived

Posted by | News, PC | No Comments

PC gamers rejoice! One of the biggest annual PC sales have arrived courtesy of the Steam Winter Sale. The sale runs from now through January 3, 2019.

During the Steam Winter Sale you can find solid deals on most of the entire Steam library. You’ll definitely want to check out sales on some of the best games of the year like Monster Hunter: World (34% off), Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (50% off), Jurassic World Evolution (75% off) and Dragon Quest 11 (40% off).

This year Steam has added an Advent Calendar of sorts, called the Extremely Cozy Cottage of Surprises. Up to once per day you can open a new page to reveal three digital goodies for Steam, such as emojis or holiday knick-knacks that add to a Knick-Knack Collector Badge. Note that any knick-knacks in your inventory must be used by February 2, 2019.

If you miss a day you can easily open up the previous doors. But the cozy cottage will disappear once the Winter Sale ends.

While shopping for sales you can also vote for The Steam Awards 2018. The categories are slightly less confusing and scatterbrained than previous years. Nominees are not restricted to games that released in 2018. The Labor of Love category alone includes Grand Theft Auto V (2015 on PC), Path of Exile (2013), and Dota 2 (2013).

Each vote grants a digital Steam Awards Trading card. Voting ends the same time the sale ends. The winners of the Steam Awards will be announced in February 2019.

Unlock Free Games in the GOG Winter Sale

Posted by | News, PC | No Comments

It’s the most wonderful time of the year – time for lots of sales on digital video games! DRM-free store GOG launched their annual Winter Sale this week, currently featuring over 1900 games on sale. The GOG Winter Sale ends January 3, 2019.

You can earn bonus free games by spending money during the sale. If you’re quick you can grab a free game right now without spending a dime, simply by stopping by the store. Full Throttle Remastered is available for free – but only for the next 24 hours. Full Throttle is a classic 90s era LucasArts adventure game, recently remastered by Double Fine Productions.

If you spend any amount of money during the sale you can earn 1996 strategy game Fantasy General for free. Spending at least $15 grants Everspace, a much more recent spaceship sim from 2016.

If you need help browsing the huge selection, GOG offers several curated lists, including by genre and publication recommendations. The Best of 2018 is a good place to start for excellent indie games, including Battletech (30% off), Dead Cells (20% off), Frostpunk (33% off) and Into the Breach (33% off).

The GOG Winter Sale also features Daily Deals. Every 24 hours new games will rotate into these deals, bringing much steeper discounts, usually 70-85% off. Chances are you won’t find a better discount any time soon.

Finally, several new games have been added to GOG Connect. GOG Connect lets you import you Steam games into your GOG library so you can play them DRM-free, completely outside of Steam. The newly added games include Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, Age of Wonders 3, and the Shadowrun trilogy.

The GOG Winter Sale ends January 3, 2019.

Grab Grim Fandango Free During the GOG Winter Sale

Posted by | News, PC | No Comments

The annual GOG Winter Sale kicked off this week. The Sale features over 500 PC games up to 90% off. The sale ends December 26.

Unlike the Steam sales, GOG still has a few fun promotions with their sales. The first is a free game, Grim Fandago Remastered. The catch is that you need to claim it before December 14 at 6 am Pacific/9 am Eastern. Grim Fandango Remastered launched in 2015 with improved textures, models, orchestral score, and director’s commentary. The original Grim Fandango released in 1998 as a late-era entry of the Golden Age of LucasArts adventure games.

Notable deals:

  • Cuphead $16.99 (15% off)
  • Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice $22.49 (25% off)
  • What Remains of Edith Finch $15.99 (20% off)
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Game of the Year Edition $19.99 (60% off)
  • Tyranny – Commander Edition $17.99 (60% off)
  • Stardew Valley $9.99 (33% off)
  • Torment: Tides of Numenera $22.99 (50% off)
  • Grim Dawn $7.49 (70% off)
  • Darkest Dungeon $9.99 (60% off)

GOG is also offering Mystery Games in the form of $3 ‘stars.’ Each star contains a game that you don’t own, and stars are priced less than the sale price of games. You have no control over what game you actually receive, making it a quasi-loot box system.

GOG first introduced this mystery game feature during their Piñata Madness sale in August. I bought three of the Piñatas and got one decent game (A Wolf Among Us).

Every purchase you make during the Winter Sale, whether it’s games on sale, mystery stars, or card packs in GWENT goes toward unlocking more free games. Spending $15 during the sale nets you Hard West, while you’ll have to spend $40 to get Master of Orion for free. Hard West is a decent but flawed XCOM-like tactical strategy game set in a dark alt-Western world. Master of Orion is the 2016 remake of the classic space strategy series, but was met with mixed reception.

The GOG Winter Sale ends December 26.
